This is a stylized shot of the Straight of Georgia in Vancouver. Sandra and I climbed the Grouse Grind to capture some incredible views of Vancouver and it’s surrounding area. What I like about this shot is the sense of scale created by the ships in the Bay as well as the depth created by the Mountains on Vancouver Island in the background. My main goal of the framing choice was to create that sense of scale and depth. I edited this shot to enhance contrast as the original was quite washed out due to time of day, lens flares and distance.

It has been 3 weeks since I safely arrived in Vancouver on my 4300+km solo cross country road trip from Toronto. I permanently relocated to Vancouver on June 1st and have been really busy settling in and getting life here organized. Vancouver has simply exceeded my expectations. I hope to meet lots of great people and express my excitement through my design, photography and illustration work. The picture is one room of our condo to help explain why I have been seemingly absent. As things settle, my frequency of posts will increase. Thanks for visiting!

Almost in Range

This is a stylized shot of an alert (and hungry) hunter and it’s prey. I composed this shot using the rule of thirds while keeping a heavy center weight of focus on the main subjects. I also processed it by desaturating a large portion of the original colour and gave it a duotone look and feel. I enjoy the composition and the geometry of it as well as the minimalist approach the cloudless day afforded me. I also love the out of focus dog head watching the Canada Goose nearly centred between his ears, almost ready to pounce!

Madison Square Garden is a major client of an agency I work with. Our job is to bring a fresh new look to MSG.com utilizing some of the latest in social media to further engage the audience. The visual system was pre-determined by the creative director leaving my primary role to maintain and manage the strict guidelines and keep the quality assurance tight while offering up new ideas that could benefit the experience. I implemented some of my own design ideas which were approved and welcomed by the client helping the successful phase 1 launch.

Early tomorrow morning (May 29th) marks my last day in Toronto and the beginning of my ambitious solo road trip from Toronto to Vancouver for our permanent relocation. Instead of having the car shipped to Vancouver, I thought it would be a great experience and a lot of fun to drive cross country on my own. It will be long days of driving but the scenery and anticipation keeps you pumped (alongside pounds of caffeine). I did this trip last summer with Sandra so I am confident in the route. Below are some shots from that trip.

I’ve seen some nice sunsets in my day but nothing in my life could compare to this incredible moment. This was the scene upon exiting the Rocky Mountains in Alberta on an ambitious 9600km road trip from Toronto to Vancouver and back in 8 days. This was shot just east of Crows Nest Pass in Alberta. We tried to capture the immense beauty with juxtaposition of the green energy wind turbines, the mountains and the sunset to help convey the powerful feeling we had at that moment. Good thing I didn’t fall into a caffeine coma!

High above Waterloo

This is a shot from a few thousand feet above the country side in Waterloo, Ontario. Sandra won a contest for two to take a flight in a hot air balloon for an early morning flight. It turned out to be a perfect morning. It was a bit chilly but it was clear enough to see Toronto on the horizon from the air. The shot itself was composed to capture the man made shapes of the farmers fields. I waited until the shadow of the balloon was in the proper location before I took the shot, I like how the shadow quickly explains how the image was captured.

St. Jacobs Market

Waterloo had one great attraction, the St. Jacobs Market. It it is a great place to buy fresh and delicious produce, meats, cheese, anything really often grown from the locals in region. This is a shot of one of the landmarks at the market. I liked how it looked in contrast to the sky in the background. I over exaggerated the mood in the image but that is what I like most about it, the cold steel hues with the stark contrast. I also liked the shapes in this image.

Meet Sandra Howard, my future wife and the owner of the photography blog SandyCanvas.com. I am such a nice boy to this little redhead, I designed and built her a site to showcase her photography . Do not let her cuteness fool you, she is very deadly. Sandra is an incredibly talented photographer with a real passion for it, she inspires me to keep working hard to create these blogs and the images on them. Definitely take a look at some of her work, it is really good! I really like how this photo turned out. It was a planned shot for her about page.

When living in Waterloo, I would often venture out into the country looking for scenes to shoot. This particular shot is on one such day. Unfortunately it is not the most engaging composition however the editing techniques I was experimenting with is the motive for posting it here. What I do like about this image is it’s somewhat surreal feel and over-processed tones and hues. This particular image was also a catalyst to a slew of new images using a similar editing style which led to exploration of other editing techniques and so on.
